Understanding Child Safety Locks for Cars

Child safety locks are an extra measure to take for the safety of your child when travelling in a vehicle. In this Keytek® Auto Locksmith blog, we will be helping to give parents and guardians all the important information regarding child safety locks in cars to provide that extra bit of protection for children when on the move.

What Is a Child Lock in a Car?

A child safety lock for a car is designed to protect children when in a moving vehicle by preventing them from opening doors, making the car ride a safe journey for your child, without needing to worry about them opening car doors whilst the car is moving.

How Does a Child Lock in a Car Work?

A child safety lock in a car is created to prevent children from opening car doors whilst the vehicle is moving. They achieve this as they disable the interior door handle, meaning it can’t be opened by a child from the inside of the car, and only opens when the exterior door handle is being used.

Why Are Child Safety Locks in Cars Important?

Child safety locks can easily save a child’s life in a car. The added protection from disabling the interior door handle prevents children from opening the car doors whilst the vehicle is moving, which ultimately takes away the risks of a child becoming injured by falling out of the car. Not only do child locks have physical safeguarding benefits for in the car as they mean a child is reduced to staying sat during the car journey, but this also puts parents and guardians at ease knowing that their child can’t open the car doors and risk the chances of injury by falling out of a moving vehicle.

How To Put a Child Lock on Car?

1.       Choose the car door you want to lock

2.       Look for the white keyhole and insert your car key

3.       Make a quarter turn

4.       The child-lock should now be engaged.

Nearly every single car will have a child safety lock option, but this may depend on the model of your vehicle. However, for most child locks all you will need to do is open the inside of the door where you want the lock to be placed and insert your car key into the white keyhole. After turning the key around inside the keyhole towards you, the child lock will be engaged. To verify that that the door won’t open from the interior, pull the door handle twice. To deactivate this, all that needs to be done is for you to turn the key the other way.

Car Safety Window Lock

If you are worried about your child winding down the windows in your vehicle and potentially trying to climb out or stick their head out of it, then you can use a window lock to prevent this. Most cars have a child lock feature on the windows to prevent a situation like this from happening. To engage this, the driver will need to press the ‘window lock’ button, meaning that only the person in the driver’s seat will have control over the windows in the back of the car.
