Auto locksmiths use non-destructive tools and techniques to unlock Smart cars, minimizing the risk of damage to the vehicle. The methods vary depending on the Smart car's model and year.

Specialized tools

  • Picks and decoders - Professional locksmiths utilize specialized picks, like the Lishi Pick, to pick and decode Smart car locks to manipulate the internal components of the locks.

  • Key programmers - Locksmiths may use diagnostic software and key programmers for cars with keyless entry systems. Allowing them to program new keys or resynchronize existing ones when the battery is dead or the fob's signal is lost.

Non-Destructive Entry Methods

  • Air wedges - Inflatable pouches used by locksmiths to create gaps in door frames for tool insertion.

  • Long-reach tools - Flexible rods with hooks, allowing access to a car's interior components, such as the door handle or central unlocking switch.

  • "Slim Jim" - For older Smart car models, tools may be used to manipulate the locking mechanism. However, "Slim Jim" tools may cause damage due to delicate electronics and airbags in modern vehicles.

Using the Manual Key

  • Backup keyhole: Some Smart car models feature a concealed mechanical keyhole, located under a plastic cap near the passenger door handle or in the boot lock. A locksmith can unlock this mechanical keyhole using the hidden mechanical key inside the key fob if the fob's battery is depleted.

  • Entry via the boot: On certain models, unlocking the boot manually with a key can unlock the main doors or allow access inside the vehicle.

  • ECU Access: For newer models, locksmiths can extract coding data from the ECU or BCM (Body Control Module) to program new keys or unlock the car electronically.

Specialized mobile locksmiths can also help with high-tech vehicles, but this requires specific expertise and equipment.
